Viking is expanding its presence in India’s river cruise market, signaling growing demand for immersive, destination-led travel in the region. The company will deploy a second vessel, the Viking Ganges, on the Brahmaputra River in 2028, joining the Viking Brahmaputra, which is scheduled to debut in October 2027.

Both ships will operate a 15-day itinerary between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat in Assam, combining an eight-day river cruise with land-based experiences across India’s Golden Triangle, including Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. The program includes guided excursions and visits to multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites, positioning the offering as a premium, culturally focused travel experience.

Each vessel will accommodate 80 guests in 40 staterooms, maintaining Viking’s small-ship model and Scandinavian design approach. The company has also opened bookings for departures through 2029, reflecting confidence in long-term demand for India itineraries.

The expansion comes as river cruising continues to diversify beyond traditional European routes, with operators targeting emerging markets such as South Asia. Viking’s move suggests that India, particularly the Brahmaputra region, is gaining traction among high-end travelers seeking less conventional cruise experiences.
