Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), the world’s largest alliance of independent hotel brands, has announced a major expansion in Japan through a new agreement with Tokyu Hotels & Resorts (THR). The partnership will integrate more than 40 hotels across Japan into GHA DISCOVERY, the alliance’s global loyalty program.

The deal marks a significant step in GHA’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence across Asia and tap into Japan’s rapidly growing tourism market. Under the agreement, Tokyu Hotels properties located in major destinations including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okinawa will become part of the GHA DISCOVERY network, giving the brand access to more than 34 million loyalty members worldwide.

Global Hotel Alliance currently connects around 50 independent hotel brands through its shared technology platform and multi-brand rewards ecosystem. By adding Tokyu Hotels to the program, the alliance expands its footprint in Northeast Asia while offering members additional options across some of Japan’s most popular travel destinations.

Tokyu Hotels operates a diverse portfolio of properties ranging from premium business hotels to resort-style accommodations. Its portfolio includes brands such as THE CAPITOL HOTEL TOKYU, TOKYU HOTEL, TOKYU RESORT HOTEL, EXCEL HOTEL TOKYU and TOKYU REI HOTEL, along with distinctive lifestyle-focused properties under the DISTINCTIVE SELECTION collection.

Strategic Expansion Amid Japan’s Tourism Boom

The timing of the agreement reflects the strong growth of inbound tourism to Japan in recent years. In 2025, the country welcomed approximately 42.7 million international visitors, with Tokyo ranking among the world’s five most visited cities.

Japan’s combination of historic cultural sites, modern urban experiences, natural landscapes and renowned hospitality has made it one of the most sought-after destinations globally. As international demand continues to rise, hotel groups and travel platforms are increasingly focusing on partnerships that strengthen distribution and loyalty networks in the country.

“With Japan seeing a sustained boom in tourism, our agreement with TOKYU HOTELS is both timely and strategic,” said Chris Hartley, CEO of Global Hotel Alliance. “We look forward to welcoming such an authentic and well-established Japanese brand into the GHA family – it will mark a key milestone in expanding our presence in one of the most dynamic travel markets in the world.”

The collaboration allows Tokyu Hotels to tap into GHA’s global membership base while giving loyalty members access to a wider range of properties across Japan’s key tourism hubs. Travelers will be able to earn and redeem rewards through the GHA DISCOVERY platform while staying at participating Tokyu Hotels properties.

Expanding Global Reach for Japanese Hospitality

Tokyu Hotels & Resorts has operated hotels in Japan since 1960 and is widely recognized for blending modern comfort with traditional Japanese hospitality. The company’s properties span a wide range of travel styles, from urban business hotels in major cities to resort destinations along Japan’s coastlines.

The company views the partnership as a step toward strengthening its international presence and introducing Japanese hospitality to a broader audience of global travelers.

“This partnership is a natural step forward in our international strategy,” said Takashi Takei, President and Representative Director of THR. “As a hotel chain rooted in Shibuya – one of Tokyo’s most dynamic and attractive destinations – we are pleased to join forces with GHA to offer our guests greater benefits through GHA DISCOVERY while introducing our unique Japanese hospitality to a broader global audience in the future. Through our diverse portfolio across Japan, we aim to serve as a gateway for international travelers to gain a deeper understanding of Japan. We’re excited to become part of a network that shares our commitment to excellence and guest satisfaction.”

For Global Hotel Alliance, the partnership reinforces its strategy of expanding through alliances with established regional brands while strengthening its loyalty ecosystem in key global travel markets.
