Choosing the right city to raise a family involves weighing a wide range of factors. Parents often look for safe neighborhoods, strong education systems, access to green spaces and a cost of living that allows families to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Cities that provide cultural activities, parks and family-friendly attractions can also offer children a richer and more engaging upbringing.

A new global ranking by Compare the Market AU has attempted to identify the best cities in the world for families by evaluating 50 major urban areas across nine different criteria. The report examined factors including safety levels, national happiness scores, education spending, parental leave policies, vaccination rates, green spaces per capita, affordability and the number of activities available for children.

After combining these indicators into an overall index score, several cities in Australia, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region emerged as the strongest environments for raising children.

Brisbane

Brisbane ranked first globally with an overall score of 6.457. The capital of Queensland performed particularly well in safety and public health indicators, including strong child vaccination rates.

One of Brisbane’s standout advantages is its abundance of green spaces. The city has nearly 85 parks and playgrounds per 100,000 residents, providing families with easy access to outdoor areas for recreation and social activities. Popular locations such as South Bank, Roma Street Parklands and the city’s botanical gardens contribute to its reputation as a family-friendly environment.

While Brisbane did not lead in every category, its balanced combination of safety, outdoor amenities and overall quality of life helped secure the top ranking.

London

London placed second with an index score of 5.992. The British capital stood out for the sheer number of activities available for children and families.

The city offers more than 750 attractions and activities suitable for younger audiences, ranging from museums and historical landmarks to cultural institutions and parks. London also benefits from extensive parental leave policies in the United Kingdom, which provide up to 54 weeks of combined leave for parents.

However, London’s high cost of living remains a challenge. For a family of four, average monthly living expenses exceed $5,000, making it one of the more expensive cities among those ranked in the top 10.

Auckland

Auckland secured third place with a score of 5.460. The New Zealand city combines strong safety levels with a high number of outdoor spaces and recreational opportunities.

Families in Auckland benefit from more than 230 child-friendly activities across the city, as well as a large number of parks and green spaces. These factors contribute to a lifestyle that emphasizes outdoor play and community engagement.

Although Auckland performs well across many categories, the country’s parental leave policies are shorter than those in Australia and the United Kingdom, which slightly lowered its overall score.

Helsinki

Helsinki ranked fourth globally with a score of 5.305. Finland’s capital is widely recognized for its strong education system and high quality of life.

The country also consistently ranks as the happiest nation in the world, and Helsinki achieved the highest safety score in the study. Finland’s public spending on education, which represents a significant share of national GDP, further strengthens its reputation as a family-focused society.

These factors make Helsinki particularly attractive for parents prioritizing education and long-term wellbeing for their children.

Sydney

Sydney rounded out the top five with a score of 5.239. Australia’s largest city offers a wide range of attractions for children, with more than 240 activities and family-friendly experiences available.

The city shares many advantages with Brisbane, including strong safety indicators and access to outdoor spaces. However, Sydney’s higher cost of living – the highest in Australia – slightly reduces its overall affordability for families.

Despite this, the city remains one of the most attractive urban environments globally for raising children thanks to its combination of lifestyle, recreation and infrastructure.

Overall, the ranking highlights how cities that balance safety, education, outdoor spaces and family support policies tend to perform best. While priorities may vary from one household to another, these factors collectively shape environments where families can thrive.
