AmaWaterways has unveiled a new river cruise concept called City Escapes, designed to give travelers more time in some of Europe’s most iconic urban destinations. The collection will operate primarily during November and December and will feature extended city stays along major rivers including the Seine, Rhine and Danube.

According to AmaWaterways, the defining feature of the City Escapes itineraries is that ships will spend at least 24 hours or more in major cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Strasbourg and Budapest. The extended stays are intended to allow passengers to explore these destinations at a slower pace compared with traditional river cruise schedules, which typically move from port to port more quickly.

AmaWaterways CEO Catherine Powell said the new collection was developed as the company expanded its operational calendar to nearly 11 months of the year. The late-season itineraries are designed to take advantage of a quieter travel period, when major European cities tend to be less crowded than during peak summer months.

The new itineraries are based on existing AmaWaterways cruise routes but have been modified to prioritize time in urban destinations. On the Seine, for example, sailings will feature extended stops in Paris, Rouen and Normandy. Rhine itineraries will include longer visits in cities such as Breisach, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne and Amsterdam.

Each day of the cruise program will offer a mix of guided tours led by local experts and free time for independent exploration, allowing travelers to customize their experience depending on their interests. Beverage service including beer, wine and cocktails will also be included in the cruise fare.

AmaWaterways said the City Escapes collection will begin operating this year and is expected to expand further in 2027 as demand grows for slower-paced, city-focused river cruise experiences.
